Agricultural tractor inspections: compliance goes through the Multi-Platform Brake Test Bench

From 1 February, mandatory inspections for agricultural tractors come into force

From 1 February, the mandatory inspection of agricultural tractors comes into force for a significant part of the circulating vehicle fleet, in particular for the categories T1b, T2b, T3b, T4b and T5, namely tractors with a speed exceeding 40 km/h.

A regulatory step that marks the beginning of a new operational phase for private testing centres and represents a strategic issue also for dealers of inspection equipment.

Understanding what the decree provides and identifying the most appropriate technical solutions is essential to support customers, ensure regulatory compliance and efficiently manage the increase in inspection volumes.

What the decree provides regarding agricultural tractor inspections

The first implementation phase includes agricultural tractors registered in the period 2017–2019, for an estimated total of around 60,000 vehicles, according to FederUnacoma data. This represents the initial phase of the mandatory agricultural tractor inspection plan provided for by the ministerial decree.

The decree establishes two main operational deadlines:

  • by 30 June 2026 for tractors registered from 1 January 2017 to 31 January 2019;
  • by 31 December 2026 for tractors registered from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2022.

This schedule entails a concentrated increase in agricultural tractor inspections, with a direct impact on the organisation of authorised inspection centres, which are required to manage new flows of agricultural vehicles within the timeframes defined by the regulations.

The decree also provides that inspection tests must be carried out with compliant equipment, including the plate brake test bench, an essential element to operate in full compliance with legal provisions.

The impact of agricultural tractor inspections on testing centres

For private testing centres, the introduction of agricultural tractor inspections represents not only a regulatory requirement but a real operational challenge.

The main critical issues concern:

  • the management of new flows of agricultural vehicles to be inspected;
  • the often limited space within workshops;
  • the need to ensure service continuity also for other types of vehicles.

In this context, rigid solutions or systems dedicated exclusively to agricultural tractor inspections may slow down the operational efficiency of centres or lead to investments that are not sustainable in the medium to long term.

It is important to underline that agricultural tractor inspections do not represent a completely new field for the sector: they fit naturally as an extension of the activity already carried out by the 870 centres, private workshops authorised by the Civil Motorisation Authority, pursuant to the Law of 1 December 1986, to perform inspections of heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.

Why the Multi-Platform Brake Test Bench is the right choice

The Multi-Platform Brake Test Bench makes it possible to meet the requirements of the decree using a single infrastructure for the inspection of multiple types of vehicles, including agricultural tractors.

For inspection centres, the main advantages are:

  • full regulatory compliance with agricultural tractor inspections;
  • optimisation of space within the testing centre;
  • greater operational flexibility in vehicle management;
  • the possibility to handle high inspection volumes without slowdowns.

For dealers, the Multi-Platform Brake Test Bench represents a strategic solution to respond to new market demands, offering inspection centres a reliable and versatile tool to manage agricultural tractor inspections together with other vehicle categories.
